SIX (and a half)!
As I said on Kate's site, I totally forgot to blog about their birthdays this year. I mean, I blogged about the parties, of course, but not about all of the other stuff! We're actually only 4 months away from his seventh birthday, but we'll talk about his sixth birthday first :) I actually remember his stats from his 6 year well check - 48 pounds (75th percentile) and 48 inches (95th percentile), which he's definitely surpassed since then. He is going to be taller than me in no time. Everyone is always amazed at how tall he is - maybe with us as parents, it's more of a shock. I don't know!

He is going to be taller than me in no time. Everyone is always amazed at how tall he is - maybe with us as parents, it's more of a shock. I don't know!
Anyway, Brett is in first grade now, at the same school, and he continues to love it. His teachers are fantastic and he is just a little sponge, absorbing everything. He loves to read, mostly to earn his "tally marks" for school, but I'll take it, whatever the motivation is. He mostly likes non-fiction, especially books about space. His retention and understanding is amazing to me, but I'm biased. He still likes math, even though he can't quite get the 20 math facts in 1 minute - he's gotten 18 out of 20 a couple times now. Almost there! His spelling is great- words like favorite, he just knows. I think the reading is definitely helping with his spelling.
He still loves Transformers, and he still loves soccer. He started playing on an indoor team this year - a group of U-7s playing in a U-8 league, so they lose most of their games, but they have improved drastically in just a couple months, especially since they don't have practices, just games. It was a good wake-up call for Brett, and it's been fun to watch him grow into a defender, just like Todd.
We're so proud of him and can't wait to see what else this year brings!

Five!
Wow - a whole hand old! We have one very excited boy on our hands and his birthday was almost a full month ago! He has learned and matured so much this year - it truly is amazing. We just had his well check on Friday, so here are the new stats.
- Height - 47.5 inches (greater than 97th percentile)
- Weight - 45 pounds (75th percentile)
- Vision 20/20 both eyes
- Hearing - passed
Seriously, who's kid is this?!?! He was the tallest kid in his class this year. Have you seen us? We're not tall people, at all. If he didn't look exactly like Todd, I'm pretty sure that I'd be accused that he wasn't really related! Obviously, he is very healthy, including the CBC and urine test that they did in the office. We also had to complete the 5 year old ASQ and he passed with flying colors. Here is a quick highlight of some of the things he's currently doing:
- Easily follows 3 step commands
- Talks in full sentences, paragraphs, etc. - easily, usually using the correct tense (-ed words)
- Enjoys throwing and catching a large ball; we're working on throwing and catching a softball too - he's doing very well so far!
- Hops on one foot at a time with ease
- Runs, fast, always
- Continuing to work on fine motor skills - tracing lines is a difficult task, but he enjoys drawing people (very detailed - fingers, fingernails, shirts, pants, socks, shoes, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc.); he enjoys practicing writing his letters; he can write his name easily
- Recognizes all numbers and letters (uppercase and lowercase)
- Can use scissors, but would rather not
- Will proudly announce that he's in the "100 club" (he can count to and past 100)
- Able to feed himself and will eat almost anything that's given to him, although pineapple and kiwi are NOT favorites!
- Able to dress himself and likes to pick out his clothes himself - he'll even ask to make sure it matches!
- Able to brush his own teeth (we go back and brush again though)
- Enjoys trying to wash his own hair and clean himself
- Knows full name, birthday, address, and phone number
He is truly a sweet sweet boy and is a good friend to his classmates. He loves to help and he loves to be recognized for a job well done. His feelings are easily hurt if he is scolded for inappropriate behavior. He is super-excited about Kindergarten at TFS and can't wait to be with the "big kids." His favorite toys are Transformers, with matchbox cars and Legos close behind! He'll stop anything for a chance to watch an episode of the 1980's Transformers on TV! We love this sweet funny boy!

Mid-Year Conferences
After an ice storm cancelled school for a few days and gave us a 2 hour delay and threw our schedule upside down and all around, we finally had Brett's mid-year conference. All of the kids in the preschool have a conference face-to-face with the child's teacher, but the conference for the 4 year olds has a little more importance - is your child ready for Kindergarten? Of course, we already know the answer is an emphatic YES! Brett has known his colors, shapes, letters, etc. for quite a while. He knows a LOT and is more than willing to show it all off at any chance he gets!
His lead teacher, Aimee, and one of his assistant's, Kris, were both there for the conference. Overall, they LOVE Brett. They love his enthusiasm, his smile, his willingness to try anything, and his interactions with his friends. They had a full packet of sort of a check-off, which isn't totally "legal," but it helps them to know which kids know which concepts. They showed us that he knew all of his upper-case letters and all but 2 of his lower-case letters. He knows all of his numbers; he can do sequencing; he can follow directions easily; he does NOT like to color, but will if you ask him to. They showed us his journal and all of it's entries - they write if they want to (and if they can), but they have to draw a picture, and the teacher writes in the words for them - apparently Brett had corn and pizza for Thanksgiving, at least according to his journal! He and Kippy (a friend from the last few years) apparently RULE Spanish class every Friday - no surprise there! He LOVES Science lessons that they get once a month.
Here is the overview of his Conference notes:
Spiritual Development: Brett participates in blessing before snack and lunch. He is respectful in Mass and during our daily Bible story and child centered devotions.
Social Emotional Development: He moves through the day with ease. He participates willingly. He follows the rules and routines. He does a good job sharing his needs and wants with teachers and friends. He is a good friend and a good role model for his friends. *There are 17 kids in this class - 13 of which are boys! Whew!*
Physical Development: Brett's fine motor skills are good. He will continue to gain finger strength and control. (Aimee said that the little legos are great for fine motor skills!) His cutting skills are good!
Physical - Gross Motor Development: Brett engages in a wide range of gross motor activities such as running, jumping, and climbing. He LOVES playground time! (He runs around "transforming.")
Cognitive - Language Development: Brett does a good job printing his name and recognizing letters. He recognizes that letters have particular sounds and that those sounds can create words. His participation and listening skills during circle time are AWESOME.
Cognitive - Mathematical Knowledge: Brett does well working with numbers - counting, recognizing 1-10, ordering amd matching. He does very well tagging items as he counts them.
Cognitive - Scientific Knowledge: Brett is enjoying our science themes this year. We have a specific lesson each month and he participates and loves it. The science lesson always includes the scientific method, which is great. He is having fun exploring our new science center.
Creative Expression - Music and Art: Brett likes music with Mr. Jim and art in our classroom. He loves participating in any project we do.

FOUR!
I cannot believe that my baby boy is already four years old! He is such a smart, witty, funny little boy and he truly amazes me every day. We had his well check last week. Here are the stats:
Height - 42.5 inches (90th percentile)
Weight - 39 pounds (75th percentile)
How is OUR kid 90th percentile in height?!?! It definitely makes me laugh, but we can see that it's true when we see him around his other classmates - he really is one of the tallest in the class even though he's one of the youngest.
We also learned that he is doing exceptionally well as far as things that 4 year olds do and know. Here's a little list of some highlights:
We talked in great length about his SEVERE reaction to bug bites... not severe like anaphylactic reaction, but severe to the point that one mosquito bite on his forearm makes his arm swell from his wrist to his elbow. The first time it happened, it scared the mess out of me. Now we know to expect it. The doctor is concerned that these severe reactions may get infected easier, so she gave us a prescription for a cream to use if we need it, but for now, we'll just keep an eye on everything.
Lastly, he got his kindergarten shots a year early. I guess one vaccine got a whole bunch of new stuff added into it and now they recommend that kids under 5 go ahead and get their booster, so why not do all of their boosters together, right? I understand the details, so if you want the details, ask. Otherwise, I'll spare everyone else the details of how vaccines work and how many different strains they contain, etc. :)
Overall, we had a great well-check. We are so thankful for our healthy little boy!

Sick Visit - 2 years, 10 months
We had to take Brett in last week for another sick visit (there have been MANY sick visits between this post and the last one, trust me). Anyway, he's up to 33 pounds, or round about there. Of course, this is fully clothed. We'll get the "official" weigh-in at his well check next month. I can't believe our baby is going to be THREE!

I dragged Brett along to get him checked out since Kate had a weight check yesterday anyway. He has a nasty cold that sounds like he's going to cough up an entire lung. I'm pretty sure he coughed up at least half a lung in the middle of the night. Yuck!
According to the scale's ability to weigh a toddler who was literally jumping up and down, he weighs about 32 pounds! What a chunkalunka!

- Can cut paper fine and can color mostly in the lines, but he'd prefer to do something else

- Knows address
- Knows age
- Working on phone number
- Loves playing with his friends... typically we hear about playing Transformers with Jameson and Matt, playing in the classroom with Karli and Julia, and playing with all of his Monkey friends, but especially Ava and Audrey

THREE Years Old!
Brett had his official 3 year well check today. Everything went well for the most part, aside from a failed hearing test in his left ear, but it turns out that ear is infected, so we'll have his hearing re-tested in about 6 months. Aside from that, here are the newest official stats:
Height: 39 inches (75th percentile)
Weight: 33 pounds (60th percentile)
As you can see from below, he has not gained ANY weight in quite some time, but he's still above average for his age, so it's not an issue at all. I mean, have you seen this kid play? Seriously - it's amazing that he hasn't lost 10 pounds the way he runs around. Such a boy!!

Here are some of his latest and greatest developments:
- Knows all body parts
- Talks in full sentences all the time (except when the pediatrician asks him questions, and then he just babbles... lovely)
- Likes to read you the story (assuming it's one that he's read a bazillion times and therefore has memorized the words)
- Knows his first and last name, and can sometimes spell his first name
- Kicks and throws a ball
- Jumps, all the time, off just about anything
- Draws lines and circles exactly as instructed, usually holding the crayon/pencil/pen/marker correctly, and takes great pride in his circle-drawing ability!
- Stacking blocks, building bridges, and other little boy stuff like that
- Sets up his stool, prepares his toothbrush, brushes teeth, rinses toothbrush, "washes" face - all by himself (mom or dad goes behind to re-brush just in case)
- CAN feed himself, and usually does for the most part... we're working on making this an "always"
- Learning to dress himself, although he's had a preference about WHICH clothes for quite awhile
- Has become ALL boy since starting preschool almost a year ago
- Still has a strong passion for cars and any other mode of transportation
- His new favorite way of getting out of something is to come running up to you and say, "I need a hug." It was cute, at first...
- Pees on the BIG potty!!! Yay, Brett!
